The ULTIMATE Prepper Meal In A Sun Oven
The ULTIMATE Prepper Meal should be one that is healthy, uses common and easily stored ingredients, is filling, is versatile, can be made to feed one person or a crowd, and should be easy to make in a grid down or off grid situation. Find out what we consider to be the ultimate prepper meal and how to make it with NO electricity in a Sun Oven.
DAL BHAT RECIPE IN SUN OVEN:
Yield 4-5 people
DAL:
1 1/2 cups lentils or peas, rinsed (yellow and red cook fastest)
3/4 cup chopped onion (raw or browned)
1 can diced tomatoes (or 2 fresh)
2 tbsp butter or ghee (opt)
1 1/2 tsp cumin
3/4 tsp turmeric
1 1/2 tsp ginger
2 cloves garlic
Salt and Pepper to taste
5 cups water (more or less depending on desired consistency)
BHAT:
1 1/2 cups rice
3 cups water
Preheat Sun Oven for 10-15 minutes in direct sunlight. Place all dal ingredients in one Sun Oven stacking pot and stir. Place all bhat ingredients in second stacking pot. Stack rice on top of dal and cover with lid. Place in Sun Oven and slow cook for 8 hours. Sun Oven will need to be occasionally realigned with the sun through the day to maintain 325-350 degree temperature. Serve dal over rice with optional curried vegetables.
Notes:
Using different types of lentils or peas could require longer cooking time
Peas are not the same as lentils but can be used interchangeably, they just take longer to cook
Pre-soaking lentils in water for 8 hours increases digestibility
Pre-heating dal will decrease cooking time for short-sun days
